SHILLONG, June 23: In a setback to the Congress, Mawphlang Block Congress Committee president George Clarence Sunn resigned from the primary membership of the party on Tuesday, citing personal reasons.
Son of former minister John Anthony Lyngdoh, Sunn stepped down from all party positions, including his roles as secretary of the East Khasi Hills District Congress Committee and president of the Block Congress.
The resignation comes months after he unsuccessfully contested the 2025 Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections from the Mawphlang-Diengiei constituency on a Congress ticket.
In his resignation letter addressed to Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Vincent H Pala, Sunn expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities extended to him during his political journey.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Indian National Congress for giving me the opportunity to serve the party and, in particular, for reposing faith in me by fielding me as the MDC candidate in the 2025 KHADC elections,” Sunn stated.
He also said that it had been a privilege to serve alongside party leaders and workers, and that he would always value the experiences and lessons gained during his association with the Congress.
“After careful consideration, I have decided, due to personal reasons, to resign from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress with immediate effect,” he said.
He thanked the party leadership and workers for their support, encouragement, and cooperation throughout his tenure.
