SHILLONG, June 26: Former Cabinet Minister and Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla has said that the issue of resuming coal mining in Meghalaya now rests with the central government.
Shylla said his party supports the resumption of mining through scientific methods in line with the Government of India guidelines, provided they are practical and feasible for local conditions. He noted that open-cast mining was explored but could not be implemented, leading to suggested changes and alternative methods.
He noted that the Meghalaya government is likely to approach the Prime Minister and the Union Coal Ministry seeking specific relaxations to facilitate the resumption of coal mining.
Currently, mining is permitted only in areas above 100 hectares, a condition that has not gone down well with miners in the Jaintia Hills.
Meanwhile, Shylla asserted that the United Democratic Party (UDP) remains united despite speculation of internal differences. “The party has its own plans and strategy,” he said, adding that if any member decides to leave, the UDP is ready to field a suitable replacement.
He emphasised that the party is stable and committed to retaining its seats under the leadership of the party president.
The situation, he added, will become clearer as elections approach.
