SHILLONG, June 29: The induction of longtime RSS leader Homnath Gautam into the BJP has reportedly triggered discontent within the party, with some members questioning the messaging surrounding his entry.
Party sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Gautam’s public statement regarding his 25-year association with the RSS before joining the BJP has caused confusion. They argued that RSS membership is traditionally viewed as a lifelong commitment and should not be framed as being replaced by a political affiliation. The development has also reportedly demoralised grassroots workers, particularly in rural constituencies.
Critics within the party pointed to a lack of clarification during the induction and questioned State President Rikman Momin’s handling of the situation.
Gautam, who joined the party with a group of supporters, is an aspiring candidate for the 2028 Assembly elections. His entry follows former NPP leader Mohendro Rapsang’s recent move to the BJP, intensifying speculation over who will secure the party ticket for the West Shillong constituency.
Dismissing reports of internal rifts, Rikman Momin claimed there was no dissatisfaction within the ranks. “No one can be unhappy when someone joins the party,” Momin said, adding that while Gautam is a new face, he is ready to work for the party.
Regarding the selection of a candidate for West Shillong, Momin said it was premature to comment as the Assembly elections are still years away.
