SHILLONG, July 1: Promotional banners displayed at the Chief Minister’s FIFA World Cup Fan Park at SRGT Parking Lot, Polo, have sparked debate after featuring Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s photograph prominently alongside global football icons such as Lionel Messi and Neymar.
The display has drawn mixed reactions from residents, with many recalling a similar controversy during the previous international women’s football tournament in Meghalaya, when several people questioned the prominence of political leaders’ photographs at a sporting event.
Some football fans felt the focus should remain on the players.
“Messi and Neymar are football legends. Their achievements have earned them that space. Politicians don’t need to stand beside them on the same poster to be recognised,” said one resident.
Another remarked, “We bought tickets to watch football, not a photo exhibition. Let the stars of the game remain the biggest attraction.”
A young supporter commented with humour, “Messi scores goals, Neymar creates chances. I’m still trying to figure out what role the giant political photo is playing—striker, midfielder, or just everywhere on the pitch?”
Others questioned whether the posters blurred the line between promoting the event and promoting political personalities.
“There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging the government’s support, but does it have to be the same size as international football icons?” asked another resident.
However, not everyone objected.
“The government has worked to bring international sporting events to Meghalaya. It’s reasonable to acknowledge that contribution,” said one supporter. “The discussion should be about finding the right balance.”
Another resident suggested a different approach:
“Why not feature local football legends, coaches, or young players alongside the international stars? That would inspire the next generation and keep the focus on football.”
The debate has once again raised a broader question: Should promotional material for major sporting events primarily celebrate the sport and its athletes, or is it appropriate to prominently feature political leaders who have supported the event?
For now, while fans hope the tournament will be remembered for spectacular goals and exciting matches, many also hope that future posters will ensure the spotlight remains firmly on the beautiful game.
