SHILLONG, July 1: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma on Wednesday highlighted the importance of democratic values and impartial leadership during an interaction with student interns.
The session, organised by the Assembly’s Law Department, included 40 fifth-semester students from St. Anthony’s College, St. Edmund’s College, Shillong Commerce College, Synod College, and K.L. Bajoria College. These students are participating in a 120-hour internship programme under the National Education Policy (NEP).
During the discussion, students questioned the Speaker on parliamentary procedures, governance, the legislative process, and his constitutional role. Sangma noted that nearly 90 students from various colleges have joined the internship programme, with interactions conducted in batches to ensure meaningful engagement.
Responding to a query about the challenges of presiding over the House, the Speaker stated that his primary responsibility is to ensure every elected member has a fair opportunity to speak. He emphasised that the role requires listening to differing viewpoints and working toward consensus in the public interest. Encouraging the youth to prioritise society over personal gain, Sangma advised aspiring leaders to complete their education, stay connected to public aspirations, and uphold the values of service and responsible leadership.
Participants described the interaction as enriching. One student remarked that the most memorable takeaway was the Speaker’s observation that while the office is titled “Speaker,” the core duty of the Chair is to listen attentively to the voices of the members.
