SHILLONG, July 1: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Shillong Mihngi Circle on Wednesday removed a group of suspected migrant workers found sleeping along the roadside at 4th Furlong after the individuals reportedly failed to produce identity documents.
The union stated that its members visited the Polo-Nongmensong locality on the night of June 30 following reports of unknown persons in the area. According to the KSU, the individuals claimed they had entered Meghalaya to seek employment but were unable to furnish proof of Indian citizenship or Elector’s Photo Identity Cards (EPIC).
The student body said the absence of valid identification raised suspicions regarding their presence in the state, prompting members to order them to leave. The union maintained that without documentation, it was impossible to verify the group’s identities or their reasons for being in the city.
The KSU’s claims could not be independently verified. Police and district authorities have not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
