SHILLONG, July 1: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has intensified its campaign for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, holding a series of organisational meetings across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne said on Wednesday that the party began mobilising its units immediately after announcing senior advocate Vivian Kynta as its candidate. Chyne reported strong turnouts and positive public response at recent meetings held in the Mairang and Mawngap constituencies.
The party is now expanding its outreach to other districts, though the schedule has been adjusted in certain areas to accommodate local activities. Programmes in the Jaintia Hills were deferred due to the Behdienkhlam festival, while meetings in Ri-Bhoi and West Khasi Hills were rescheduled to avoid clashing with the peak cultivation season.
The UDP plans to continue its campaign throughout July, with a major organisational meeting scheduled for Saturday in the Nongthymmai constituency. Kynta will attend the gathering alongside senior party leaders to engage with grassroots workers.
Expressing confidence in the party’s choice, Chyne said Kynta’s professional credentials and public standing as a senior advocate have been well received by voters. He added that the feedback from the early stages of the campaign indicates growing momentum for the party ahead of the bypoll.
