Miami, July 2: Defending champions Argentina will look to continue their march towards a fourth FIFA World Cup title when they take on tournament debutants Cabo Verde in the Round of 32 at the Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.
On paper, the knockout clash presents one of the biggest mismatches of the tournament, with three-time world champions Argentina facing a Cabo Verde side making its first-ever appearance at the FIFA World Cup.
Argentina, appearing in their 18th World Cup, have looked every bit the title contenders after cruising through the group stage with three consecutive victories. Lionel Scaloni’s men began their campaign with a 3-1 win over Jordan before producing an emphatic 3-0 victory over Algeria to finish the opening phase in commanding fashion.
The South American giants have been among the most impressive teams in the competition, combining defensive solidity with attacking flair as they continue their quest to retain the trophy they lifted four years ago.
Leading the charge once again is captain Lionel Messi, supported by the attacking duo of Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez, giving Argentina one of the most formidable forward lines in the tournament.
Cabo Verde, meanwhile, have emerged as one of the surprise packages of the 2026 World Cup.
The African nation has scripted history by reaching the knockout stage in its maiden appearance at football’s biggest tournament. (Agencies)
