Atlanta, July 2: England captain Harry Kane etched his name into the record books after scoring twice in his side’s 2-1 victory over DR Congo in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, becoming only the second footballer in history to score 20 or more goals across the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship.
Kane’s match-winning brace took his combined tally in the two major international tournaments to 20 goals, comprising 13 strikes in FIFA World Cups and seven at the UEFA European Championship.
According to Opta, only Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more goals across the two competitions, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner amassing 24 goals—10 in FIFA World Cups and 14 in European Championships. The milestone further cements Kane’s status as one of the most prolific forwards in international football, with the England skipper continuing to deliver on the biggest stages.
The 32-year-old also strengthened his reputation as a knockout specialist. His two goals against DR Congo took his tally to 10 goals in knockout matches at major international tournaments (World Cup and Euro) since Euro 2020, the highest among all European players during that period.
France captain Kylian Mbappé sits second on the list with seven knockout goals, while Spain’s Dani Olmo, Denmark’s Kasper Dolberg and Portugal’s Gonçalo Ramos have each scored three, according to Opta. (Agencies)
