New Delhi, July 2: Just months after being named Player of the Tournament in India’s triumphant ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, Sanju Samson is facing a fresh battle to retain his place in the national T20I side.
The wicketkeeper-batter scored 321 runs in five innings during the World Cup, including crucial knocks in the knockout stages, helping India defend the title.
However, the emergence of 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has intensified competition for a place at the top of the order.
The Rajasthan Royals youngster enjoyed a phenomenal IPL 2026 season, scoring 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.30 to win both the Orange Cap and the Most Valuable Player award.
Although Samson also impressed in the IPL with 477 runs, his recent struggles on India’s tour of Ireland and in the ongoing T20I series against England have fuelled calls for Sooryavanshi to make his international debut.
With competition for places growing stronger, India’s selectors now face a difficult decision between backing the experienced World Cup hero or handing an opportunity to one of the country’s brightest young talents.
With India’s next phase of T20 cricket likely to be shaped by an eye on the future, the coming weeks could prove pivotal for both players. While Samson has already demonstrated his ability to deliver under the biggest pressure by guiding India to World Cup glory, recent form and the irresistible rise of Sooryavanshi have ensured that past achievements alone may no longer guarantee a place in the XI. The teenager’s extraordinary IPL exploits have created one of the toughest selection debates in recent years, forcing the team management to weigh proven experience against generational talent.
