M’laya shooting talent shines at state c’ship

Shillong, July 6: The 11th Meghalaya State Shooting Championship 2026 concluded successfully after a six-day competition at the Assam Regimental Centre here, with 128 shooters from six districts competing in 68 events.
Organised as part of the state’s preparations for the 39th National Games in 2027, the championship brought together participants from East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, North Garo Hills and West Garo Hills, highlighting the growing popularity of shooting in Meghalaya.
The event also showcased participation across generations, with 64-year-old John Kharshiing competing in the Senior Masters 25m Pistol event and 12-year-old Kerdaiai Syiemlieh taking part in the 10m Air Rifle competition.
Shooting Association of Meghalaya president John F. Kharshiing said the championship marked another step towards strengthening the state’s shooting ecosystem ahead of the National Games.
With the championship providing valuable competitive exposure, the state’s shooters will now shift their focus to higher-level competitions as Meghalaya continues its preparations to host the 39th National Games.
