New York, July 7: France captain Kylian Mbappe on Monday condemned a Paraguayan senator over racist remarks made after France’s World Cup round-of-16 victory over Paraguay.
Mbappe called Senator Celeste Amarilla of Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party a “despicable woman” who was “unworthy” of serving in Congress after she posted comments on X mocking his origins, upbringing, education and appearance following his match-winning penalty on Saturday.
“Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup,” Mbappe wrote on X.Amarilla later deleted the posts and issued an open letter in French and Spanish, saying her issue was with Mbappe rather than France. She expressed regret for insulting him but also demanded an apology, accusing the French star of gender-based violence in his response and threatening legal action if he failed to retract his remarks.
