SHILLONG, July 8: The mysterious death of a businessman from Assam’s Nalbari district has left his family and the local community in shock after he was found critically injured in Meghalaya’s Byrnihat several days after he went missing.
The deceased, Gunajit Kalita (42), was a resident of Barbhaluki village near Tihu and the proprietor of Maa Laxmi Hardware at Nannattari New Chowk.
According to family members, Kalita left his residence on the afternoon of June 30 after lunch, driving his car (AS-01 FQ-1064).
He had informed his family that he would first visit Nathkuchi in Tihu to get his vehicle repaired and attend to some business matters before heading to Bezkuchi.
However, his mobile phone became unreachable at around 8 pm that evening. As concern grew, relatives launched a search and later located his vehicle at a motor garage in Rangia.
Days later, Kalita was reportedly found in a critically injured condition at a hotel in Byrnihat, Meghalaya.
Meghalaya Police rescued him and shifted him to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for emergency treatment.
The circumstances surrounding his condition remain unclear. Eyewitnesses claimed that rope-like marks were visible around his neck, raising further questions about what may have happened before he was found. Despite efforts by doctors to save him, Kalita succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
A joint team of Assam and Meghalaya police is investigating the circumstances leading to Kalita’s death.
