SHILLONG, July 12: A trail of destruction left by four tourists from Uttar Pradesh at a newly-commissioned Risa Colony homestay has sparked a manhunt and reignited the debate over the safety of local hosts and the conduct of visitors in the state’s hospitality sector.
The incident occurred at ‘The Oakwood’, an Airbnb property, where the guests allegedly went on a rampage after being asked to vacate for repeatedly violating house rules.
According to the FIR, the four individuals brought unauthorised visitors to the property, consumed alcohol, and smoked inside the rooms despite a strict no-smoking policy. When confronted by the management, the guests reportedly assaulted the caretakers and threatened the staff before fleeing the premises.
Evidence shared by the owner on social media suggests deliberate aggression. The visuals, which have since gone viral, show holes punched into the walls, damaged fittings, stained washbasins, and rooms intentionally trashed with garbage.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Sunday confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is under way. “Efforts are being made to trace the accused,” Syiem said.
Police sources indicated that investigators are currently tracking the vehicle used by the group and have alerted checkpoints to prevent the accused from fleeing the state.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and entrepreneurs, with many calling for stricter regulations and better protection for local youth who have invested in the state’s growing tourism industry.
