SHILLONG, July 12: A week into the investigation, Shillong police are still struggling to track down a college student accused of multiple sexual assaults, a delay that has prompted the Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) to demand an immediate, time-bound probe into the serial nature of the crimes.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed on Sunday that a lookout notice has been issued against the accused, who remains at large. “We are yet to arrest him. Efforts are on,” Syiem said.
The failure to apprehend a suspected serial predator in the region’s primary educational hub has raised serious concerns regarding campus and urban security. MPMC president Joplyn Scott Shylla stated that the accused’s actions represent a grave violation of the dignity and safety of women and must be dealt with strictly under the law.
Shylla urged the police to conduct a thorough, unbiased investigation and ensure the suspect is prosecuted without further delay. She also expressed solidarity with the survivors who have come forward, insisting they be treated with respect and compassion throughout the legal process.
The Mahila Congress further called for the Home department to ensure a safer environment for female students, stressing that accountability through due process is essential to maintaining the city’s reputation as a safe haven for education.
