Chennai, July 14: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to begin the search for a new head coach following the departure of Stephen Fleming, with reports suggesting former captain MS Dhoni is expected to play a key role in identifying his successor ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The five-time IPL champions announced on Monday that they had ended their 18-year association with Fleming, who guided the franchise to five league titles and established one of the most successful coaching tenures in IPL history.
According to The Indian Express, Dhoni, who is currently in the United Kingdom, is expected to return later this month and take an active role in the selection process. The report added that the franchise is believed to be favouring an Indian coach, with informal discussions with prospective candidates also possible during Dhoni’s stay in the UK.
Fleming’s departure reportedly follows a review of CSK’s performances across its various franchise teams.
The Chennai-based side failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs for a third successive season, while sister franchise Texas Super Kings also endured a disappointing campaign in Major League Cricket, finishing at the bottom of the standings.
The report further stated that changes to the coaching staff may not end with Fleming’s exit. Bowling coach Eric Simons is also reportedly facing an uncertain future, while no decision has been taken regarding batting coach Mike Hussey.
Several names have emerged as possible candidates to succeed Fleming.Former India batter Hemang Badani is among the frontrunners after enjoying considerable success with Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, where he guided the team to four titles.
Although his stint as Delhi Capitals coach has yet to produce a playoff appearance, his familiarity with the Chennai cricket ecosystem is seen as a positive.
Former India head coach Rahul Dravid is also being linked with the role. Dravid, who guided India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, is currently unattached after leaving Rajasthan Royals.
Widely regarded for his work in developing young talent, he is viewed as a strong candidate if CSK decide to rebuild around a new generation of Indian players. (Agencies)
