JOWAI, July 17: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday announced that the state government will provide greater support to traditional festivals celebrated by various tribes and faith communities to ensure Meghalaya’s indigenous heritage is preserved for future generations.
Speaking at the Behdienkhlam festival in East Jaintia Hills, the chief minister stated that the government recognises the deep cultural, spiritual, and historical significance of these events.
He noted that such celebrations are living traditions that reflect the identity and values of the state’s indigenous people.
Sangma said initiatives are being developed to promote festivals across all tribes and indigenous faith groups to prevent unique customs from fading.
He stressed that every community’s heritage deserves recognition and support, regardless of tribe or denomination.
The chief minister added that promoting these festivals helps keep traditions alive while educating the younger generation about their roots. Furthermore, he noted that these celebrations foster social harmony and showcase Meghalaya’s cultural diversity to domestic and international visitors.
Sangma reiterated that the government remains committed to safeguarding the state’s cultural identity through sustained assistance for traditional practices and conservation efforts.
