Danish police officer and 2 others shot, reports say
COPENHAGEN, July 17: A Danish police officer and 2 other people were shot, including the suspected perpetrator, on Friday, according to media reports.The shooting occurred in Nørresundby, in the North Jutland region in northern Denmark.Danish broadcasters TV2 and DR quoted a police spokesperson as saying the injuries were serious. The police department’s website was down on Friday in the wake of the shooting.Police received a report of a fire in an industrial area of Nørresundby at 1:39 p.m. (1139 GMT) and rushed to the scene, where they were met with gunshots, DR reported. The officers returned fire. Police said that the shooting was over by 3 p.m. (1300 GMT), but the investigation would continue, DR reported.It wasn’t immediately clear who the third injured person was. A column of black smoke was visible in photos and video from the scene. Further details weren’t immediately available. (PTI)
Landslide in southwest China buries homes, thousands evacuate
BEIJING, July 17: A landslide Friday in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing buried residential buildings, forced more than 1,100 people to evacuate and trapped others, state media reported.State broadcaster CCTV said at least 10 people were rescued from the debris and that search and rescue operations were ongoing.CCTV said the landslide occurred at around 9:08 am in Chongqing’s Pengshui County. Massive amounts of rocks and soil washed downslope, burying more than 10 residential buildings.Images by CCTV showed part of a mountainside collapsing onto a residential area. Rescue efforts were hindered by the unstable terrain and the risk of another landslide, according to the broadcaster.Large slabs of rock had slid beside buildings into a waterway below. The rain-triggered landslide occurred near a section of the Wujiang River.Authorities said water, electricity and gas supplies were suspended within a 1-km radius of the landslide to prevent further disruptions.(PTI)
Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly seeks provisional provincial status
ISLAMABAD, July 17: The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution urging Pakistan’s federal government to grant the mountainous region provisional provincial status along with constitutional and political rights.The resolution, supported by both treasury and opposition members, was moved by lawmaker Jalal Ali Shah during the assembly session on Thursday, Dawn newspaper reported.It noted that the Gilgit-Baltistan (Empowerment and Self-Governance) Order 2009 established an elected legislative assembly and enhanced self-governance, while reaffirming that constitutional advancement of the region remained an objective of the state.It also noted that the Gilgit-Baltistan Order, 2018, granted legislative powers to the assembly. The House urged the federal government to implement the committee’s recommendations by granting Gilgit-Baltistan provisional provincial status, enabling its residents to elect representatives to Pakistan’s National Assembly.
