SHILLONG, July 20: National People’s Party (NPP) national working president James Pangsang Kongkal Sangma was on Monday sworn in as Meghalaya’s lone representative in the Rajya Sabha, marking the start of his tenure in the Upper House of Parliament.
Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office to Sangma, who took the oath in Hindi. The two-time former MLA from Dadenggre was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha last month.
He was accompanied at the ceremony by his brother and Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, family members and senior NPP leaders.
Congratulating the newly sworn-in MP, the Chief Minister said in a post on X that he wished his brother James Sangma success in his new responsibility and hoped he would effectively represent the voice and aspirations of the people of Meghalaya while contributing meaningfully to the state and the nation.
The NPP also extended its congratulations, describing the Rajya Sabha berth as a significant responsibility and expressing confidence that James Sangma would serve the interests of Meghalaya with strength and wisdom in Parliament.
