Orange alert sounded for East Khasi Hills; heavy rainfall expected

NONGPOH/SHILLONG, July 20: A child was killed and three others injured when landslide debris crashed into a house at Umlamphlang village under Mawhati constituency in Ri-Bhoi district on Monday morning.
The landslide was triggered by incessant heavy rainfall that lashed the district for several hours, causing a mass of earth and debris to collapse onto the house. The same downpour triggered widespread flooding and waterlogging across parts of the district.
Sections of National Highway 6 at Nongpoh and Byrnihat were inundated, while the 20 Mer–Patharkhmah road at Umladoh village was also flooded, disrupting vehicular movement.
Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar expressed profound grief over the tragedy and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family. He also expressed sympathy for the injured and wished them a speedy recovery.
Meanwhile, authorities have sounded an Orange Alert for East Khasi Hills as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted “exceptionally heavy” rainfall over the next 24 hours, raising the threat of landslides and flash floods. The intense precipitation is likely to be accompanied by widespread thunderstorms and lightning.
While East Khasi Hills remains the highest priority zone, a Yellow Watch is in effect for the rest of Meghalaya, including Jaintia Hills, Ri-Bhoi and the Garo Hills regions.
The district administration has ordered an immediate halt to all mining and quarrying operations. Schools in vulnerable areas have been placed on high alert, with heads of institutions advised to suspend classes if local conditions worsen. Traffic authorities are regulating movement and preparing diversions for waterlogged stretches.
Residents have been urged to restrict travel to essential trips only and strictly avoid riverbanks and active mud-flow zones. Farmers have been advised to suspend fertiliser application and ensure proper drainage in paddy fields.
For real-time updates, citizens can use the Mausam, Meghdoot and Damini mobile apps. Emergency inquiries may be directed to 0364-2911979 or the national toll-free number 18001801717.
