Shillong, July 23: The Second Badminton Promotional Tournament 2026 got underway at the J.N. Indoor Sports Hall, Polo, on Thursday, bringing together more than 200 shuttlers from across Meghalaya to compete in a three-day championship aimed at promoting badminton and nurturing young sporting talent.
Organised to provide a competitive platform for emerging players, the championship features competitions across multiple age categories, including Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 for both boys and girls. The tournament also includes men’s singles, women’s singles, mixed doubles and veterans’ events.
Addressing the gathering, Dkhar encouraged the participants to make the most of the opportunity and emphasised the importance of sports in shaping discipline, teamwork and a healthy lifestyle among young people.
He also lauded the organisers for promoting badminton at the grassroots level and creating opportunities for aspiring athletes.The three-day tournament will continue until Saturday, with players from different districts vying for top honours in their respective categories.
Organisers expressed confidence that the event would help identify promising talents capable of representing Meghalaya in future state and national competitions.
The tournament was formally inaugurated by Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Methodius Dkhar, who attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest. As the action unfolds over the next two days, the focus will not only be on crowning champions but also on discovering talented shuttlers capable of taking the next step in their sporting journey.
