NONGPOH, July 23: Residents of Pahamlang village in Ri-Bhoi district have accused Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar of causing severe flooding in the area by dumping earth that obstructed natural drainage channels.
The affected residents filed a formal complaint with Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Jonathan Shylla on Thursday. They alleged that large-scale earth-filling activity in the village diverted rainwater into residential areas, leading to unprecedented inundation following heavy rainfall on July 20.
A total of 17 families were affected, with several forced to evacuate as muddy water entered their homes. Residents reported extensive damage to agricultural produce, household belongings, and property walls, estimating the total financial loss between Rs 40 lakh and Rs 50 lakh. Many of the affected individuals are daily wage earners who have sought immediate government assistance. The delegation, supported by the Ri Bhoi People’s Council (RBPC), urged the district administration to conduct an immediate site inspection and provide emergency relief.RBPC president Jayson Lennox Nongrum condemned the “irresponsible” actions and called for corrective measures to prevent a recurrence.
The ADC assured the residents that the district administration would examine the grievances and take appropriate action.
