Agartala:Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Monday suggested for policy intervention in empowering womenfolk both economi-cally and socially in compliance to Beijing declaration to save women from atrocities.
Speaking in a gathering as part of celebration of the International Women Day, Mr Sarkar said India was one of the signatories of 189 countries in Beijing decla-ration two decades ago, which laid the commitment to ensure political, civil, economic, educational rights of the women along with guaranteeing physical and social securities.
‘I want to remind the Central government that India has lost its traditional glamour of paying high respect to the women now. Rather atrocities on women in different forms are increa-sing day by day that shows the moral degradation of our society,’ he said.
Contemplating for strong policy framework and social strategy to regain the moral of Indians to safeguard the womenfolk from all sorts of violence and atrocities, he said status of women has to be upgraded by empo-wering them at large extent.
The Chief Minister, however, pointed out that India has framed several strong laws to deal with the crime on women but the situation has remained been deteriorating day by day and women became like a good in materialistic society.
‘Women are being portrayed indecently in visual media but Indian has not yet thought to bring legislation to arrest the culture. Whenever, women are rapped, molested or become victim of violence immediately we reacts sharply but still we failed to formulate strong strategy to deal with the situation,’ he rued.
Sarkar maintained that gender balance is the pre-condition to substantial and sustainable progress of the nation and that is very important and said: ‘There is a need for liberation in society from gender discriminations to establish a non-discriminatory and equitable society for taking the nation forward succes-sfully.'(UNI)
Referring to the instance of political empowerment drive of Tripura, he said the Left Front government of the state has appeared to be the first in the country which reserved 50 percent seats for women in local self government and three-tier Panchayat.
‘I feel the demand of one-third seat reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies is justified and Parliament to make necessary legislation to ensure it for development of the women,’ Mr Sarkar added. UNI
