Agartala: The High Court of Tripura has disposed off about 2,565 cases in the past two years, which has significantly reduced the pendency of five-year old cases by 10 per cent, said Chief Justice Deepak Gupta on Tuesday.
He however pointed out that in 2013 when the High Court was established, there were more than 30 per cent five-year-old cases pending but in October last year, it was reduced to only 6 per cent, but however, in the past five months, the figure again rose to 10 per cent.
Justice Gupta, however was of the opinion that a large number of people in the state were still unaware about their fundamental and legal rights .
He further urged the advocates and civil society organisations to bring about more and more Public Interest Legislation for the upliftof society.
The High Court of Tripura is now being recognised as an IT-enabled High Court in the country, he stated. It has introduced SMS service for both litigants and respondents for the first time in the entire country.
“Not only in High Court but the pull based SMS based service has also been introduced in 57 different courts of lower judiciary out of the 64 in Tripura so far, which has curtailed dependency of petitioners on the advocates for basic information,” Justice Gupta added.
It has drawn the attention of the Supreme Court and now, it is being replicated in other High Courts of the country. (UNI)
