SHILLONG: NPP legislator and Opposition Chief Whip in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, James K Sangma, on Wednesday met Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, in New Delhi and apprised him of the extension of the GHADC tenure on three occasions.
Sangma informed the Union MoS that the illegal extensions were an attempt to ensure the continuity of the Congress-led Executive Committee in the GHADC.
The term of the GHADC which runs for five years has been extended unconstitutionally and goes against the very spirit of the Constitution, Sangma alleged, while claiming that if the elections had been postponed for a particular reason, the District Council should have been placed under Administrator’s Rule.
Sangma sought the Centre’s intervention in this regards and also called for immediate elections to the GHADC.
The NPP leader also informed the Union MoS about the disillusionment setting in among the ANVC and ANVC-B cadres due to alleged false promises made by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and urged the union government to release the rehabilitation packages meant for the cadres at the earliest for fulfillment of the terms of the Agreed Text of Settlement.
