SHILLONG: In a freak incident, 14 road construction labourers from Dhubri in Assam died at Saipung in East Jaintia Hills after they reportedly consumed chutney made from wild fruits during the evening meal on Sunday.
According to sources, the labourers from Assam died in their labour camp at Saipung and their bodies were recovered only on Monday morning.
As per initial reports, some labourers collected the wild fruits from the nearby forest on Sunday and prepared the chutney for the meal. All the workers including a manager were found dead in the labour camp on Monday morning. However, the bodies of the labourers are yet to be identified.
Though the manner in which the labourers died raised suspicion, police have ruled out any foul play in the incident.
