Death anniversary of father of Khasi alphabet observed

NONGPOH: The All Primary School Teachers Association (APSTA) on Wednesday observed the 166th death anniversary of The father of Khasi Alphabet, Thomas Jones, along with the 173rd year of establishment of Primary Schools in Khasi-Jaintia hills region, in a programme held in Ri Bhoi College.
On the occasion, APSTA Secretary, FC Shullai said that, the programme was also organised to mark 32 years of establishment of the APSTA. He added that APSTA will put pressure on the government to implement an education policy, which will help provide quality education and will also fight for the rights of teachers and encourage them to give their best  to promote quality education in the state. Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest, chief adviser to the Government of Meghalaya, DD Lapang highlighted the life of Thomas Jones and his contribution to the state.
“Thomas Jones deserves to be praised and honoured. He not only preached the Gospel, but also founded the Khasi Alphabet and promoted the Khasi Community in all aspects of life”, he said. Earlier, Lapang and Lyngdoh also released the souvenir of APSTA.
