NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday heard the case pertaining to the death of as many as 15 mine workers due to the collapse of a mine in South Garo Hills in 2012.
The hearing in this regard under “threat to life arising out of coal mining in South Garo Hills district” has been going on soon after the NGT issued the interim order banning rat hole mining in Meghalaya from April last year.
While six witness of the Meghalaya Government were examined by the tribunal on Wednesday, it had already examined three personnel of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board a day before.
The Government Counsel Ranjan Mukherjee said that the officials heading the mining and geology department and state police personnel were examined on Wednesday.
Earlier during the sitting, the NGT had raised doubts on the official reports and other records submitted by the Meghalaya Government about the 2012 mining accident in the district when 15 persons perished after being allegedly trapped in the coal mine.
The Tribunal had on October 7 last directed the State Government to submit the complete records of the incident, including those who probed the accident and number of workers who worked in the mine, among others.
