SHILLONG: Confident after its good show in the GHADC elections, the Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) launched a direct attack on the Congress with the 2018 Assembly Elections in mind.
Speaking to media persons on Friday, NPP State president, WR Kharlukhi said that the people of Garo Hills have taught a lesson to defectors who shift sides for political mileage.
It may be mentioned that a sizeable number of seats in the last GHADC elections were won by the then NCP in 2009, but later most of the MDCs deserted the party and shifted their allegiance to Congress.
It may be mentioned that 25 sitting MDCs lost the GHADC elections this time.
Reacting to a query about the toppling game which is frequent in the state, Kharlukhi said that Congress is a habitual offender in such cases. He also advocated the implementation of anti defection law in District Councils to prevent MDCs from shifting allegiance.
“The best solution to the problem of defection would be for the Governor or other authority to dissolve the Executive Committee in district councils or the Government,” he said.
Meanwhile, UDP MLA Jemino Mawthoh said that the party is fairly happy with its performance in the GHADC elections considering that this was the first time it decided to contest on its own.
