SHILLONG: The Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) has demanded scrapping of the “controversial” Codification of Garo Customary Law, 2009.
GHSMC chairman Nikman Ch. Marak said that new Executive Committee (EC) in the GHADC should scrap the controversial Codification of Garo Customary Law, 2009 in its first session.
Commenting on the recent agitation against the participation of non tribals in GHADC elections, Marak said, “Article 244(2) and 275(1) of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India clearly state the provisions of administration in tribal areas… Non-tribals have no business in the district council.”
The GHSMC also demanded that the law barring non-tribals from participating in the District Council elections should be framed in order to safeguard the interest of the Garos.
