SHILLONG: Spitting on the effigy of the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma by the protestors before it was put on fire on Friday has raised eyebrows among the onlookers.
The incident took place at Additional Secretariat Parking Lot after the culmination of the mammoth rally.
Before the burning of the effigy, one of the headmen asked people to spit on the effigy and also called some women who were chewing betel nuts to do the same.
This has evoked sharp criticism from several quarters of the society.
A notable figure in the state, who does not want to be named, said that such behaviour (spitting and burning of effigy) does not go with Khasi culture and tradition.
“Spitting or burning effigy will not affect the spirit of the person,” the notable figure added.
