SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), West Jaintia Hills, and the Jaintia National Volunteer, Central Body, have demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of Kleophas Nongkhlaw who was arrested on August 2 and died on August 4, 2015.
In a press conference here on Friday, Wanbun K. Dkhar, president, HNYF, said, “Kleophas died while in police custody at Jowai PS and the magisterial inquiry, headed by Additional District Magistrate, D.M. Wahlang, has indicated negligence of police duty.”
They expressed their disagreement with the suicide angle of the police, saying, “It is a lame excuse of the police department.”
They have demanded that the perpetuators of the crime be punished as per provisions of the law.
In this connection they submitted a memorandum to Home Minister Roshan Warjri.
It may be reminded that Nongkhlaw had been picked up by police on suspicion of burglary from Iawmusiang market without his family members being informed and two days later he died in police custody.
