SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded an apology from IGP G.H.P. Raju who had claimed that members of the HYC had instigated crowd during the November 5 rally leading to violence and also for his claims that some of the HYC protestors were drunk.
Addressing reporters on Monday, HYC president Peter Lawai said, “Claiming that the people are drunk is denouncing the community as a whole; we attended the rally in our individual capacity with no intention to create trouble.”
He also claimed that since the day had been declared as dry day, it would have been impossible to procure alcohol.
Asked whether the HYC would take action if any of its members was found to have been involved in the violence, Lawai said the organization will not take any responsibility.
“The rally was organised by the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri u Hynniewtrep but fingers were pointed at the HYC,” its organising secretary Nickson Dohling asserted, while questioning the motive of the IGP in blaming the organization for the violence.
