ALS for inclusion of Garo language in 8th schedule of Constitution

TURA: The General Conference of Achik Literature Society (ALS) was held recently at Christian Girls Higher Secondary School (CGHSS), Tura where Tura MP and former Lok Sabha speaker, P. A Sangma graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
P. A Sangma spoke about the greatness of Garo language, the richness of its vocabulary and its distinctive quality.
He said that words and terms from the dialects or varieties of Garo must be included in the vocabulary of the standard language, including those spoken in neighbouring Bangladesh.
He urged upon the A’”chik Literature Society to regulate the use of terms, especially the Scientific and the technical ones.
During the general meet, ‘Achik Ku’rang’ a magazine produced by the society was released by the Chief Guest who also handed over the ALS Literary Award, 2015 to Chenggan A Sangma .
A felicitation of two doctors, Meuler Beul .M. Sangma and Monish Ch Marak by retired Pro-Vice Chancellor of NEHU and ICFAI, Dr Milton S. Sangma on their obtaining the Doctor of Philosophy Degree also took place during the programme.
A discussion on the issue of recognition and inclusion of Garo Language in the 8th schedule of the Constitution of India was also done and several resolutions passed.
It decided to request the Meghalaya Government for the constitution of an official committee for the purpose of recognition and inclusion of the Garo Language in the 8th schedule as well as for recommending it while urging the GHADC to take up the issue.
Other highlights of the programme included the presentation of papers on different topics by different individuals in a seminar held under the theme ‘Plant World, in our Environment’.
