SHILLONG: The BSF, Meghalaya frontier is harping on the construction of single row fence within 150 yards from International Border in Meghalaya and the matter was taken for approval of Bangladesh government.
During the recently concluded BSF-BGB level meeting held at Sylhet, the matter was discussed so that the BGB could take up the matter for obtaining clearance from Bangladesh Government. A BSF official said on Sunday that instead of the height of 10 feet, the BSF is planning to construct a single row fence with a height of 20 feet in the Meghalaya border.
The BSF official admitted that in Khasi-Jaintia Hills sector, there is protest from the pressure groups like the Coordination Committee on International Border (CCIB) to construct the fence at zero line which was not possible.
The official added that the famers are free to cultivate several stretches despite the fencing being provided no construction work has been carried out here.
Transfer of land
Though there was transfer of land as per the agreement between India and Bangladesh in West Bengal, it has been informed that transfer of Adverse Possession of Land (APL) in the Meghalaya border will take some more time.
The land related to the adverse possessions in Meghalaya will have to be further assessed and demarcated by the survey teams of both Meghalaya and Bangladesh.
As per the agreement, Meghalaya will avail 240.578 acres, while the State has to transfer 41.702 acres of land in the Lobacherra-Nuncherra sector to Bangladesh.
