Pedestrians using Anjalee-Police Bazar shortcut at the receiving end

SHILLONG: Showing least concern towards the cause of pedestrians, the Army authorities have, without any prior notice, closed down the gate leading to Police Bazar from Anjalee causing inconvenience to people who take the passage frequently.
The road from Anjalee Cinema to Butcher Road leading to Police Bazar which remained opened from dawn till dusk was an easy and time saving route for the pedestrians, who otherwise would have to walk a long distance to reach Police Bazar.
On Saturday, people including families were stranded on both sides of the gate and later compelled to walk back since the gate was under lock and key.
Though they were annoyed over the matter, some of them said that there was no room to lodge complaints as army authorities have always remained inaccessible to the people.
No guards were found in the vicinity and the nearby Assam type buildings belonging to the army were also locked.
There were also instances when the Army authorities had closed the gate from Lady Keane leading to Police Bazar.
Though the matter was reported in the media earlier, the authorities concerned failed to take any corrective measures.
There used to be frequent frictions between the civilians and the army on trivial matters caused by the alleged careless attitude of the army authorities.
When contacted, Defence PRO Amit Mahajan said that he is out of station and will inquire into the matter only when he comes back.
When asked, he also refused to provide the phone number of any higher ups, which indicates that the issue will linger and the pedestrians will have to wait for the mercy of the defence authorities.
