Agartala: An MLA of ruling CPI(M) in Tripura and its state committee member, Manoranjan Acharya, has been expelled from the party on charges of moral turpitude, a party statement said on Friday.
“In view of an allegation of moral degradation of the MLA of Birganj constituency, Manoranjan Acharya, party’s state committee conducted an inquiry into the allegation and asked him to resign from the post of MLA. He also submitted the resignation from the post of MLA to the state assembly,” the statement said.
The statement also stated that the meeting of the state committee of the party on Thursday night decided to expel him from the party as the charges against him were proved.
However, the party did not elaborate on the charge against him.
Leader of the opposition Sudip Roy Burman demanded immediate arrest of Acharya on the charge of raping a minor girl inside the party office of Amarpur subdivision of Gomati district.
“It is good that the CPI-M party has initiated action against Acharya on grounds of moral turpitude, but what astonishes me is that why the police did not take any action against him! He should be immediately arrested and put behind bars,” Burman said.
“I also demand immediate medical checkup of the minor girl who was allegedly raped by Acharya inside the party office on November, 27 last,” he said. (PTI)
