NONGPOH: Hundreds of people from the villages bordering Assam took to the streets in Nongpoh on Monday holding black flags to show solidarity with the fasting members of the HANM women’s wing who are staging an indefinite hunger strike in protest against the “indifferent attitude of the State Government towards their demands.”
The rally started from the spot where the hunger strike was being staged and concluded at the DC Office campus in Nongpoh. Members of RBYF central body, HNYF northern region and HYC, Umtyrnga also took part in the rally.
Earlier, led by Umtyrnga Rangbah Shnong, Bor Khortyngkut and few village elders, hundreds of villagers residing along the Assam-Meghalaya border paid a visit to the members of HANM women wing who are staging a hunger strike which entered the seventh day on Monday.
The HANM women’s wing members are demanding the construction of a single lane road connecting 13 Mile to Killing in Ri Bhoi which would benefit as many as 18 villages.
The villagers also slammed the government for its alleged adamant attitude. “It is sad to see that none from the Government has bothered to pay a visit to the fasting NGO members,” said a village elder.
Speaking to the newsmen Umtyrnga Rangbah Shnong said that the people living in the border areas are facing numerous problems and had been neglected in terms of development and road connectivity and urged the government to accept the demand of the HANM women’s wing failing which they will be forced to intensify the agitation.
