SHILLONG: Eying a win in the Assembly polls scheduled for 2018, Independent MDC from Mawlai PT Sawkmie has joined the Congress.
A statement issued by Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee said on Sunday that it has “accepted Sawkmie, MDC as a member of Indian National Congress as desired by him”.
When contacted, Sawkmie said that he has been planning to join the Congress for a long time as “it is a big party”.
“The papers were ready regarding joining Congress before Christmas and the intention of joining the party is to strengthen its base in Mawlai”, he said
Sawkmie started his political career with UDP and then switched his allegiance to MDP.
Though he had contested from KHNAM in the 2014 district council polls, he changed allegiance and supported the Congress led PDF.
Sawkmie has revealed his plan to contest the 2018 Assembly polls from Mawlai on a Congress ticket.
Mawlai is currently represented by Embhahlang Syiemlieh of UDP after he defeated former legislator Founder S Cajee who passed away last year.
Sawkmie had represented Mawlai as legislator in the past till he decided to contest from Pynthorumkhrah in the 2013 Assembly polls.
To a question ,  Sawkmie ruled out any intention to become the CEM of KHADC in the context of the perennial tug of war between the present CEM P N Syiem and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
