‘Will resume services if kidnapped victims freed’

TURA: The Garo Hills Motor Workers Union (GHMWU) which is under pressure from the general public to resume transport services to Chokpot has appealed to the group involved to release two of its members who were abducted recently.
“The group responsible must first release our members unharmed and without condition. We will resume normal services once their safety is ensured,” it said in a statement.
Further, pointing out that the incident had led to local people suffering for want of transportation; the union also urged all groups not to interfere in the daily transport services in future.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Silning .D. Sangma, president of the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) also made an appeal for the safe release of the kidnapped persons.
Sangma also lamented the inaction by the District Administration and the elected representatives of the people from the district on the issue.
“The Nokmas, Sordars, Laskers and the society as a whole must unite to fight against such anti social elements. It is only then can we safeguard each other from the enemies of the society,” Sangma said.
Truck driver abducted
A truck driver from Tura was kidnapped a few days ago by suspected ASAK militants when he was travelling to Baghmara, South Garo Hills, a delayed report said.
According to police, the truck driver, one SB Gupta was abducted by the armed militants, while his helper was allowed to go,  from a place near Mindikgre.
