SHILLONG: The youth wing of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on Monday inspected the water reservoir of Shillong Municipal Board and Public Health Engineering (PHE) at Iewduh and collected samples from it to determine if the water was safe for consumption.
Briefing media persons about the inspection, KHNAM youth wing president, Thomas Passah said that there was a need for the public to know if the water was fit for consumption especially after the “revelation” that water from the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme, Upper Shillong was slightly acidic in nature.
The water samples collected were sent to Pasteur Institute and the reports are expected to be released within a week.
Stating that there was no security personnel stationed at the site despite PHE claims that the water reservoir at Iewduh was a restricted area, Passah urged the PHE and the Municipal department to supervise the area to prevent people from polluting and misusing the water.
He also said that the State Government should replace some of the tankers that were put up during the British rule and called upon headmen of various localities to make it a point to clean the water tankers once every year.
