HDR reviews airport, ISBT works

SHILLONG: Transport minister H D R Lyngdoh on Wednesday reviewed the ongoing expansion project of Shillong Airport at Umroi and that of the Inter-State bus terminus at Mawiong.
The minister, accompanied by top transport department officials, impressed upon the authorities concerned to speed up both the projects.
Lyngdoh’s visit to the Airport came two months after the Meghalaya High Court directed the authorities to take the possession over 31 acres of land belonging to the Defence authorities required for the expansion project.
Lyngdoh later revealed that the sixty per cent work of the boundary wall of the airport has been completed.
During the visit, the Director of Airport Authority of India  informed the minister  that there was no hindrance in diverting the village road which passed  through the airport.
The minister was briefed on the installation of Instrument Landing System in the airport.
Earlier, Lyngdoh inspected the ongoing construction of the Inter-state bus terminus at Mawiong.
The North Eastern Council (NEC) is funding the project at a cost of Rs 48 crore.
The State Government would seek  Rs 8  crore from NEC for the second phase of  the project, Lyngdoh said.
The State Government has completed the first phase of the   project for which an amount of Rs  4  crore was sanctioned by   NEC.
The deadline for completion of the project is 2017.
Once operational, the bus terminal is expected to accommodate as many as 200 buses.
