Demand for change of guard

SHILLONG: Amid the demand for change of leadership in the party, the emergency meeting of Central Executive Committee of UDP will be held at the residence of the party president Donkupar Roy on Thursday to arrive at a consensus on a new leader.
Though the general council meeting of the party is scheduled for February 27, Thursday’s meeting assumes significance with differences of opinion emerging from UDP regarding the selection of president of the party.
Two working presidents of UDP, Bindo Lanong and Paul Lyngdoh are keen to be in the race for the post of the party president as they had raised the demand for change of leadership.
The general secretary of UDP Allan Dkhar said on Wednesday that the need to have a consensus for the post of president will be discussed at the central executive committee meeting of the party.
“For the best interest of the party, consensus is the need of the hour”, he added
Dkhar said that the demand for change of leadership was emerging only from a certain section of the party leaders and added that the general council meeting of the party scheduled for February 27, will finally decide on the matter.  Dkhar pointed out that a nomination committee, comprising district presidents, MLAs and MDCs among others, will recommend its decision for the selection of new team which will be accepted during the general council meeting.
