Allegations of ‘political pressure’ in appointment procedure

SHILLONG: As many as 10 warders at the Shillong jail may face the axe due to the alleged faulty appointment process undertaken by the previous regime.
Addl. DGP in charge (Prisons) B.L. Buam told reporters on Monday that some jail staff were appointed when Kulbir Krishan was the DG (Prisons) in 2012-13 without obtaining the approval of the government.
According to Buam, though there was a condition in their appointment letters that they can be terminated anytime, this does not absolve the illegality.
“The recruitment procedure was irregular and they were appointed y by way of using political connections,” Buam alleged.
However, while denying media reports that there was alleged scam in the current recruitment process for the appointment of warders and others, the official claimed that a transparent process was followed in the ongoing recruitment process.
“The results of both written tests and personal interview and the final merit list were updated on the Meghalaya police website and this can be verified by the job aspirants,” Buam said.
The Prisons department will soon appoint 65 warders, 6 assistant jailors, two cooks, one driver, barber and electrician, he said.
