Inquiry into allegation of highhandedness
SHILLONG: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi has asked the district police chief to conduct a secret and confidential inquiry into the complaint of villagers from Assam who have accused a Meghalaya police officer of highhandedness.
The villagers alleged that officer in-charge of Hallidayganj outpost in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya had assaulted a youth from Assam, identified as Firajul Hoque, manager of a teer counter.
They complained that the inspector had snatched Rs 50,000 from Hoque on February 23. He also allegedly arrested Hoque, kept him at the police outpost for a night and tortured.

Five held for illegally felling timber
SHILLONG: Staff of the Forest department recently apprehended four persons at Simsanggre Range Forest for illegally felling trees.
Police said that Md. Sobijuddin Ali Sheik, Md. Umur Ali, Md. Shoaib Ali and Md. Bahar Ali were apprehended by Simsanggre Range Forest personnel on Saturday while they were illegally felling trees at Simsanggre Reserve forest.
Police arrested the accused and seized fourteen logs from the place of occurrence. Police later arrested one of their accomplices Wilseng N Sangma from Chidekgre village in East Garo Hills.

Shillong Bypass turns accident prone zone
SHILLONG: The Shillong Bypass has become an accident prone area with a large number of road mishaps being reported in the recent past.
On Sunday, two persons died on the spot in a major road accident on the Shillong Bypass near ICAR, Umiam, when a Guwahati bound car (AS 01 BC 0129) collided head on with a truck (AS 01 S 6675) at around 5.30 PM.
Speaking on the large number of road accidents on the Bypass, Ri Bhoi SP G.D. Kharwanlang said police are conducting checking besides barricades have also been put up on the Bypass.
“People tend to drive after getting drunk but we are checking the same,” he said.

Provincial elected
NONGSTOIN: Br. Herman Wanniang has been elected Provincial of the Franciscan Missionary Brothers (C.M.F.S.) North East India Province for a term of three years.
Br. Herman hails from Mawkyrwat, Nongstoin Diocese, and is the first Khasi friar elected to the post of Provincial of the C.M.F.S North East Province.
He pioneered the St. Francis D’ Assisi School and College in Siejlieh, Nongstoin, and has been working as the principal of the College and Rector of the house.
The Franciscan Missionary Brothers is a Catholic religious congregation and was founded in 1901 in Nagpur by a German friar Br. Paulus Mortiz.
