SHILLONG: The professional tax department of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will be computerized with effect from April 1 to plug all leakages.
Informing this here on Wednesday KHADC EM in charge Finance, Neil Antonio War, expressed gratitude to the Central government for the             Special Assistance scheme considering that the KHADC was facing financial crunch.
“We are looking for ways to tap any leakages for the financial benefit of the Council,” he added.
Meanwhile, Nongstoin MDC L.G. Nongsiej demanded starting of the Nongstoin market to which KHADC CEM P.N. Syiem informed that 80 per cent of the construction work has been completed and the market will be opened very soon.
At the same time, Nongsiej demanded that a fact finding committee should be constituted to bring about a systematic approach to border issues.
Raising the issue of the PIL on dissolution of the District Council, Mylliem MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew and Nongpoh MDC Rona Khymdeit stated that the District Council should be strengthened to prevent allegations against it and to avoid any conflict of interests.
“The District Council administration should be improved. It is not easy to call for dissolution of the District Council as the employees will find it hard to make ends meet,” Khymdeit added.
She further stated that in view of the rising unemployment in the State more industries should be opened in the State with strict rules and regulations.
Participating in the general discussion, Nongthymmai MDC Latiplang Kharkongor said, “There should be administrative reforms, reforms in traditional institutions and we need a strong Benami Act to protect the indigenous people.”
“We need to check Benami, it is a parasite. We can check the trade system and as for Benami it is up to the government,” the EM in charge of Finance said.
Clarifying his stand, the CEM said the KHADC will co-operate with the State government in areas concerning the District Council.
