SHILLONG: Residents along the Wahumkhrah river are currently in the process of submitting their documents to avoid eviction by MUDA.

The Gauhati High Court Division Bench earlier questioned the decision of MUDA to evict the occupants of the land along Wahumkhrah river and its adjoining areas by dismantling the structures on their failure to submit the representations/ show cause notices within the permitted time limit.

A source from the Urban Affairs department on Sunday informed that the documents of the claimants will be verified by the revenue department.

It may be mentioned that the Gauhati High Court Division Bench on June 25, 2010 had directed MUDA to take stringent action on all illegal structures which have emerged next to Wahumkhrah River right from Polo to Fourth Furlong areas within 30 days after issuing of the order.

According to a source from the Urban Affairs, now the revenue department has to look into the ownership issue.Reacting to a query about the proposed plan of action against the illegal encroachers, the source said, “We have to be strong in each and every matter before we take up further legal action.”

It is learnt that the Government has plans to build an “expressway” in the controversial stretch in Polo along the Wahumkhrah after removal of the illegal structures.

The Urban Affairs department earlier had even managed to demolish certain illegal structures in Polo area but due to the stay order from the court, the process could not be completed.

“The ball is in the Revenue department’s court now and they are working on the verification of land,” a source said here on Sunday.
