SHILLONG: Despite much trouble and unrest in Sohra, following the recent incident wherein three innocent persons were murdered arousing fear and apprehension among the people of the area and the neighboring villages there has been no effect on the flow of tourists here.

It was noticed that the incident failed to dampen to spirit of tourists to visit the place considered a famous tourist destination.

Confirming this on Sunday, SDO of Sohra Civil Sub Division, James Suchiang told The Shillong Times that, ‘‘there has been no effect whatsoever as the incident took place during the night and today being a Sunday, many tourists were seen in the area”, Suchiang added.

Meanwhile, last week’s incident which surprised the whole district has created fear who avoid visiting the area lest they are accused as being one of the men-ai-ksuid (black magic).

“The killing was inhuman and as we know that people in that area still believe in superstitions and I fear that if I go there, they may be suspicious of me”, a resident of Shillong said.

He further said that Sohra will still retain its title as a hot tourist destination in the state and added that it’s only a matter of time when people from within the state will forget and throng to this place like always.

It may be reminded that following the murder of three innocent persons in Sohra on charges of being involved in the practice of men-ai-ksuid (black magic) last week, efforts were made by the district administration to maintain peace and tranquility in the area to prevent any backlash.

The district administration held a peace meeting with the various Rangbah Shnongs and members of the different Dorbar Shnongs of Laitlyngkot area on Saturday.

Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police AR Mawthoh said police would continue with their investigation into the death of the three persons.
