SHILLONG: The KHNAM youth wing on Tuesday met Labour Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and demanded hike in the minimum wages for labourers in Meghalaya.
Thomas Passah, president KHNAM youth wing said that during the meeting, the Minister admitted that the minimum wage is low but however said later that the government’s financial condition also needs to be looked into before arriving at any decision.
Passah said that the wage for unskilled labourer in Assam is Rs 240 whereas in Meghalaya, the wage for highly skilled labourer is Rs 212.
“If Government can enhance the MLA scheme from Rs 1crore to Rs 2 crore, there should not be much problem in raising the wage for labourers, “ he said.
The youth wing also intend to meet the principal secretary of Labour Department in a week’s time to know the status of their letter which was sent to the Government earlier seeking enhancement of the wages.
