SHILLONG: NEIGRIHMS has successfully carried out caesarean section of its first IVF-ET Baby (In-vitro Fertilization & Embryo Transfer also known as Test Tube Baby) on Saturday.
The mother, 32-year-old Ruchi, had twin babies and their weight ranged from 3.25Kg for the 1st twin male to 2.8Kg for the 2nd twin female.
NEIGRIHMS became the first Government Medical Institute to have started IVF-ET in the Eastern region with only a few more in the rest of the country.
In a statement issued to the media, NEIGRIHMS said that both the babies and the mother are doing well after the surgery.
“It was a proud moment for the Department of Obstertics and Gynaecology, NEIGRIHMS to have carried out the caesarean section of its first IVF-ET patient,” the statement added.
The surgery was performed by Prof. Santa Singh, Professor & Head along with Dr. Subrat Panda, Associate Professor and Dr. Ananya Das, Assistant Professor with team of Anaesthesiologist & Paediatrician.
The same team of doctors along with senior residents of the department was involved in the Artificial Reproductive Technique in the Institute since August 2015.
Ruchi was unable to conceive for last 10 years before approaching the OBG Department of NEIGRIHMS, when Artificial Reproductive Technology (ART) was just started in the institute.
She was given Controlled Ovarian Hyper Stimulation (COHS), then Ovum pick up was done on 13.8.2015 and Embryo transfer was done on 15.8.2015. Following this she had undergone regular Antenatal Care and close monitoring in NEIGRIHMS.
The ART (IVF- ET) has remained the option for rich childless couples, though ART (IVF-ET) is costly. But again only a few are blessed with babies because of a disappointing success rate of only around 20% – 35% all over the world.
The cost incurred by the couple will be almost 8-10 times lesser in NEIGRIHMS than in a private hospital.
Since, the first IVF cycle in August, 2015, many patients have been receiving the benefits of this advanced technology in infertility. “In March 2016, we even had a couple from Bangladesh,” Prof. A. Santa Singh said.
He said that IVF-ET facility in NEIGRIHMS will be a boon not only for the people of Meghalaya but also for rest of the country and neighboring countries.
He said that under the guidance of Prof. A. G. Ahangar, Director, NEIGRIHMS, and Government assistance from time to time, NEIGRIHMS would be able to serve more childless couples in future.
